[Canary for national camp?] Tourism Minister Landau: I won't run in upcoming elections on Yisrael Beiteinu list

[Dr. Aaron Lerner - IMRA: Observers note that until now Uzi Landau
appeared able to reconcile being in a party that featured the radical
program of Yisrael Beiteinu head Liberman [create a sovereign Palestinian
state in "less-than-Auschwitz-borders" with security for Israel ostensibly
provided via the deployment of various foreign troops inside the Palestinian
state] on the grounds that it was completely irrelevant for the coming
years. But now that Liberman is pressing for the implementation of a
program rather than just writing proposals that are utterly and completely
ignored the situation has changed.

Yisrael Beiteinu suffered another blow on Sunday after senior party member
Tourism Minister Uzi Landau announced he would not be running in the
upcoming elections.

Landau, 71, said Sunday afternoon at the Yisrael Beiteinu faction meeting
that he has informed party leader Avigdor Lieberman that he will not present
his candidacy in the upcoming March elections.

"In my 31 years of public service, I've served in central positions in the
Knesset and government, of which the last six years were spent in Yisrael
Beiteinu," Landau said.

Among other roles, Landau served as the chairman of the Foreign Affairs and
Defense Committee, headed the State Comptroller Committee, served as
internal security minister, was a minister in the Prime Minister's Office,
was the minister of national infrastructure, the minister of energy and
water and in his most recent role, the tourism minister.

"During that time I took part in discussions, initiatives, and decisions
important to the country's path," Landau said. "I see myself continue acting
and contributing, but for me it is time to move on outside the parliamentary
system."

He concluded that "Yisrael Beiteinu, led by Foreign Minister Avigdor
Lieberman, will play a central role in the political system that is coming
into being, and I want to thank (Lieberman) for our years of working
together. I will of course support (the party) and aid the campaign as I'm
asked."
