Who is he?
Your Golden Boy. Otherwise known as Nadav Guedj, Israel's answer to Justin
Timberlake and most recent victor of Israel’s most-watched singing
competition, The Rising Star. Contrary to appearances, he is only 16, one of
the youngest performers at this year’s Eurovision, and is still studying at
high school. I wonder if he’s brought any homework to Vienna with him.
What is he singing?
Guedj’s song is called Golden Boy, and it’s about how he’s your Golden Boy.
It’s written by Doron Medalie, an Israeli songwriter and composer with a
long track record of producing hits, and you can see why. In contrast to the
numerous ballads in this year’s contest, Golden Boy is a cheeky club banger,
with hints of traditional klezmer music behind the catchy pop chorus (“And
before I leave / let me show you Tel Aviv”).
What makes him different?
Mainly the shoes. The big, gold, winged shoes reminiscent of Asterix’s hat.
There is serious power in those shoes – they seem to unite Guedj and his
three backing dancers in the most energetic and entertaining dance routine
full of shimmying, bouncing, body rolls and high fives.
What are the odds on him winning?
Less than average: 66/1, meaning they currently sit about half way down the
table. Given that Israel haven’t even qualified for the final since 2010
though, this is already an achievement. Even if it isn't a winner, Guedj’s
song will certainly inject some fun into Saturday’s final.
