Weekly Commentary: Only A Cabinet Vote Away

Ordinance Law and Administration, 1948
… 11B The law, jurisdiction and administration of the State shall apply to
any area of the Land of Israel that the Government sets in an order.

That’s right. All it takes is a vote of the Cabinet.

The Arabs finding themselves residents inside sovereign Israel may not
respond by dancing in the streets, but if they enjoy all rights, including
the option to take Israeli citizenship and vote in the elections, they will
most likely rejoice in the privacy of their homes.

Some are advocating taking the plunge and extending Israeli sovereignty to a
small area.

But the condemnation will be almost the same as a move encompassing all of
Judea and Samaria - the entire "West Bank".

And after the condemnation cold feet.

If anything, a "one state solution" sans the Gaza Strip - if it included the
option to take Israeli citizenship and vote in the elections - might
actually encounter a substantially less significant response.

In fact, many Palestinian leaders are on record as cynically accepting such
an alternative in the belief that the move would shift the struggle from the
streets to the bedroom, with an eye on ultimately winning via the ballot box
what years of violence failed to achieve.

If anything, the prosperity that would most certainly follow would most
likely accelerate the existing downward trend in the Palestinian birth rate.

And in any case, this is sans the Gaza Strip.

Thanks to PM Sharon's retreat, the "demographic bomb" is a dud.

There's going to be a window of opportunity to make history.

It could be a tragedy to kick the can down the road.
