Weekly Commentary: PM Netanyahu Pays Top Dollar For Formal UAE Recognition

Weekly Commentary: PM Netanyahu Pays Top Dollar For Formal UAE Recognition
Dr. Aaron Lerner 18 August, 2020

"Peace for peace". That is how Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu tonight
termed the deal for the full normalization of relations between Israel and
the United Arab Emirates.

But the Joint Statement of the United States, the State of Israel, and the
United Arab Emirates explicitly links the deal to that "Israel will suspend
declaring sovereignty over areas outlined in the President's Vision for
Peace."

Peace for foregoing the application of Israeli sovereignty?

I fear that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

#1. Israel efforts to stop illegal Arab construction in Area C to date have
been minimal. Will they now be completely suspended, thus facilitating
Israel's forfeiture of almost all of Area C?

#2. Will the semi-freeze on Jewish construction in Judea, Samaria and the
eastern part of Jerusalem become a complete freeze?

#3. Will the Government of Israel promote accelerating the "lawfare" against
Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria by the "Blue Line" Civil
Administration which proclaims patches inside well established communities
illegal on the basis of photographic hints of possible agricultural activity
generations ago?

The onus is on Prime Minister Netanyahu to show via action rather than words
that he did not pay for the possibility of formal UEA recognition with
permanently losing Area C.
