What U.S. Interests Are Served by Keeping Hezbollah's Gun Cocked at Israel's Temple?

What U.S. Interests Are Served by Keeping Hezbollah's Gun Cocked at Israel's
Temple?
Dr. Aaron Lerner 21 September 2024

The Biden-Harris Administration is in a full court press to resolve the
Israel-Hezbollah situation in an arrangement that leaves Hezbollah's
hundreds of thousands of mid-range and long-range rockets and guided
missiles intact.

Is this a goal or an outcome?

One can certainly argue that this is an outcome.

The 2006 UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1701 prohibits the presence
of those rockets and missiles, or for that matter, any Hezbollah armed
forces, anywhere in Lebanon.

The Biden-Harris Administration has no interest in a conflagration that
could hurt their party on November 5th, and even the most optimistic
assessment doesn't foresee a "diplomatic solution" that provides for the
implementation of UNSCR 1701.

But there is a possible darker explanation.

Iran also has a finger on the trigger of the "gun" Hezbollah has pressed at
Israel's temple.

And this Hezbollah threat serves as a key deterrent against Israel taking
independent action to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

To be clear: it isn't that the Biden-Harris Administration wants Iran to
ultimately nuke the Jewish State.

They are just convinced, as are many others, that Iran only wants nukes to
dissuade the West from attempting regime change in Iran.

And what about our leaders?

It would be nice to believe that 4-dimensional chess player Netanyahu had
the beepers and walkie-talkies blown up, knowing this would lead to a
meeting of the top commanders of Hezbollah's elite Radwan force which could
be bombed, thus setting the stage for the IDF to not only destroy Hezbollah
south of the Litani but also take out the rockets and missiles.

Assuming that in the coming days this is the outcome, it is also possible
that the true explanation is that Netanyahu's bread landed butter-side up.

But that is okay.

What matters is the outcome, not the credit.
